Should I Include My GitHub Profile on My Resume?

I'm early in my career and unsure whether adding my GitHub profile to my resume will help or hurt my job applications. I've heard that some companies reject candidates after seeing messy or unimpressive profiles, while others may question why a candidate didn't include one. How do employers actually use GitHub, and what should I check before linking to mine?

It really depends on what’s on the profile. Most hiring managers won’t spend much time browsing GitHub unless something immediately looks relevant, so don’t include it just to fill space. Before linking it, remove abandoned tutorial projects, clean up anything embarrassing, and make sure your best repositories have clear READMEs, useful commit history, and—when possible—a live demo. A small number of polished, relevant projects can help; a cluttered profile may hurt.

That matches my experience. I’ve seen employers mention GitHub in interviews when the candidate had a couple of focused, well-documented projects, but they usually ignored profiles full of unfinished experiments.

For a junior applicant, GitHub can be especially useful because it gives employers evidence of what you can build when your professional experience is limited. Include it if you have a project that demonstrates skills related to the roles you want. A meaningful open-source contribution or a project with real users is a strong signal, but simply having many repositories isn’t impressive by itself.

Some companies will look at it and some won’t, so treat it as supporting evidence rather than a requirement. Plenty of people get hired without an active public profile, and even impressive projects can be overlooked. If your GitHub is outdated or doesn’t represent your current abilities, leave the link off your resume and focus on explaining your strongest work there instead.
