My 2019 MacBook Air has become extremely slow and laggy, even immediately after startup. Browsing and basic tasks are nearly unusable, while Netflix plays normally. The laptop also heats up quickly and the fan starts running soon after turning it on. I'm trying to save money, so I'm wondering whether it's worth having Apple check for a hardware problem, or whether I should back up my files and replace it. Could troubleshooting, a cleanup, or a fresh macOS installation make a meaningful difference?

It may still be usable for light tasks, especially since streaming works fine, but browsing and everyday responsiveness can deteriorate as software gets more demanding. I’d avoid paying for a major repair unless diagnostics show a simple, worthwhile fix. Back up your data, try basic cleanup or a fresh installation, and replace it if the lag continues.
The Intel processor in that model was never especially powerful and tends to run hot under load. A clean reinstall might make it feel better, but it won’t turn it into a fast modern laptop. Macs with Apple silicon, such as an M1 or newer model, will feel dramatically faster and usually run cooler. If you can afford one, replacing it may be less frustrating in the long run.
Back up everything important, then consider erasing the Mac and reinstalling macOS. Years of accumulated apps, startup items, and system clutter can make an older computer feel much worse. If it’s still slow after a clean installation, that’s a good sign the hardware is simply reaching its limits.
Before replacing it, open Activity Monitor and check the CPU and Memory tabs while the slowdown is happening. Also make sure the startup disk isn’t almost full. Running Apple Diagnostics by holding D during startup can help identify hardware problems. A 2019 Air is old, but it’s worth troubleshooting before spending money.
