I’m choosing between a used MacBook Air M2 and a new MacBook Neo, but my budget only stretches to an 8GB model either way. How much should my intended use and the used laptop’s condition affect the choice?
Used M2 Air or new Neo if I can only afford 8GB?

Start with what you’ll actually do on it. For browsing, email, documents, and streaming, 8GB may be workable. If you expect to keep lots of apps and browser tabs open, or use demanding creative software, I’d be more cautious about either option at 8GB.
If your needs are basic, compare the price, return options, and condition rather than assuming one is automatically the better buy.

People do disagree about how much memory an everyday user needs. Eight gigabytes can be enough for lighter tasks, but it leaves less room if your workload grows or you multitask heavily. If you already know you need demanding apps, I’d avoid making a purchase based on hoping the limits won’t matter.

I’d be wary of buying the used Air without checking its battery condition, overall wear, and whether you can return it if something’s wrong. A used M2 could make sense if it’s in good shape and priced well. The new Neo is the simpler pick if you value a fresh purchase and the used Air’s condition is uncertain.
