What Actually Makes a Linux Distribution “Gaming-Friendly”?

Why are some Linux distributions marketed as being better for gaming than others? If I can install Steam, Lutris, Heroic, the necessary drivers, and related packages on almost any distribution, do gaming-focused distributions provide any meaningful advantage beyond convenience and preconfiguration?

A gaming distribution is basically choosing the “everything should be ready immediately” approach. For example, some are designed to behave like a console, with controller support and a game-focused interface enabled by default. Others are regular desktop systems with extra gaming packages included. The underlying operating system is still doing the same general job; the distribution just saves you from doing the setup manually.

Some go further than just bundling software. They may include tools like Proton GE, Gamescope, custom schedulers, controller setup, or a console-style interface that boots directly into Steam’s Big Picture or Game Mode. None of that is essential, though—Ubuntu LTS and other general-purpose distributions can work perfectly well for gaming once configured.

The main benefit is avoiding the initial setup hassle, especially with drivers and hardware-specific configuration. Certain distributions offer a smoother out-of-the-box experience, while others provide scripts and utilities that make installing gaming software easier. Hardware matters too: GPU support, particularly the difference between AMD and Nvidia, can be more important than the distribution itself.

Most of the difference is convenience. Gaming-focused distributions usually come with graphics drivers, launchers, compatibility tools, performance tweaks, and useful utilities already installed or configured. You can turn nearly any mainstream distribution into a gaming system by adding the same packages yourself.
