What affordable self-paced learning platforms do you recommend for IT skills?

Enterprise learning subscriptions can be expensive, especially for someone paying out of pocket. I'm looking for reasonably priced ways to learn IT topics independently, ideally with structured courses, useful labs, or good coverage of certifications and practical skills. What platforms or learning methods have worked well for you?

For networking-focused study, I’ve had a good experience with INE. CBT Nuggets is also worth considering if you want a more traditional video-course format. Skillsoft Percipio has a personal subscription option with a fairly broad selection of relevant, in-depth lessons, although it isn’t completely comprehensive.

Udemy is a solid budget option. I’ve used it for certification material, including MD-102 and Cloud+, and the courses are often inexpensive when discounted. KodeKloud is another good choice if you prefer clear, guided lessons and hands-on exercises.

These days I mostly use official documentation, occasional short tutorials, and an AI assistant for specific questions. That’s much faster than committing to a 40-hour course, but you still need to verify AI-generated explanations against reliable documentation. It’s risky to use AI as your only source when you’re completely new to a subject.

That makes sense. I like the idea of using AI to clarify something after checking the official documentation, rather than treating it as the authority.

O’Reilly and YouTube have been my most useful combination. O’Reilly offers deeper technical material, while YouTube is great for quick explanations, demonstrations, and filling in gaps.

Don’t overlook books and vendor-provided labs. Books are often less distracting and easier on the eyes than long video courses, and a lab helps turn the theory into practical knowledge. Many vendors provide free practice environments, so you can combine those with a book without spending much.
