I'm looking for an affordable tablet mainly for studying. Samsung appeals to me because of its software-update support and battery life, but I'm open to other brands too. Ideally, I'd like plenty of storage, smooth multitasking without lag, strong battery life, and a desktop-style mode such as Samsung DeX. If possible, I'd also like to connect it to an external monitor or projector. Please include approximate prices in Canadian dollars. I'm not very familiar with tablet specs, so a kind explanation of any unrealistic expectations would be appreciated.

One thing to clarify is what you mean by PC mode. Samsung DeX gives you a desktop-like interface with resizable windows, but external-display support depends on the exact tablet model and connection method. Some affordable Galaxy tablets may support DeX on the tablet itself but not video output through USB-C, so check the specifications carefully if you need a monitor or classroom projector. A compatible dock or adapter may also be required.
The Samsung Galaxy Tab A9+ is probably the closest match at the lower end of the budget. It has handled split-screen studying well for me, and the battery can last a full day of notes, PDFs, and browsing. Expect roughly $300 CAD, depending on storage and sales. If you can find the 8GB RAM version, it’s worth paying extra for it—the 4GB model can struggle when several apps are open at once.
The Galaxy Tab S9 FE is another good option if you find it discounted, usually around $450–$600 CAD. It has better performance than the A9+, good battery life, Samsung DeX, and enough power for schoolwork and multitasking. Buying an older generation or waiting for a sale can make Samsung’s higher-end tablets much more affordable.
