What are you using for Terraform Cloud alternatives with drift detection?

I’m comparing infrastructure-as-code platforms and need both workflow governance and a reliable view of drift. Some resources also sit outside our existing IaC workflows, so I’m wondering whether one platform can cover both orchestration and broader cloud inventory, or whether these are better treated as separate problems.

I’d separate the requirements before picking a product. Drift checks can only compare resources the system knows how to track, so a platform may do a good job on managed workspaces while still missing infrastructure that was never brought under IaC.

That leaves two questions to test: how the tool runs drift checks across your actual number of workspaces, and how it discovers cloud resources outside those workflows. Ask vendors to demonstrate both against your environment rather than relying on feature labels.

We use ControlMonkey, and it’s worth putting on the shortlist if you want a platform centered on Terraform automation across cloud environments. I’d still validate the specific drift and governance behavior you need, especially at your workspace scale, instead of assuming a product fit from the overview.

Firefly is another option to evaluate if the missing piece is visibility into what’s already running. Its inventory-first framing is different from starting with IaC workflows, which may help identify unmanaged resources and gaps in coverage.

That doesn’t automatically replace an orchestration platform, though. Check whether its governance and workflow controls match your needs, or whether it would complement the tool that runs plans and approvals.

If a third of the infrastructure is outside IaC, I’d treat recovery coverage as its own project. Better drift reporting on the managed portion won’t create a complete record of resources that the workflows don’t track.

Inventory discovery can help show what is missing, then you can decide what to import, codify, or manage another way. A single product might cover several pieces, but verify that it can handle the unmanaged-resource problem as well as the Terraform lifecycle.
