What legitimate options exist for accessing a deceased parent’s locked iPhone?

My father passed away several years ago, and I'm the legal owner of his property according to the relevant estate and probate documents. I'm trying to access his iPhone, but he never designated a Legacy Contact. I've visited retail stores and contacted Apple multiple times, but I've been redirected between departments without receiving a clear resolution. I'm not looking for a bypass or anything unlawful—I want to understand the official process for handling a deceased user's Apple Account and device in the United States. Has anyone successfully done this? Did you need a court order, probate paperwork, or other documentation? I'm especially interested in whether there's a way to recover cloud-stored data, access a backup, or use the phone itself without violating Apple's security policies.

Since probate and estate rules vary by state, it may be worth asking the probate court or an estate attorney what documentation Apple is likely to accept. Gather the death certificate, proof of your appointment or inheritance, the device serial or IMEI, and any information tied to the Apple Account before contacting Apple’s bereavement or account-access channel again.

Apple has an official process for requesting access to a deceased family member’s Apple Account. Estate documents and possibly a court order may be required, depending on the request and your location. However, there’s an important distinction: Apple may be able to help with eligible data stored on its servers, but it cannot remove the iPhone’s passcode while preserving the contents. A passcode-locked device can generally only be reset by erasing it.

Legal ownership of the physical phone doesn’t automatically grant access to the private data stored on it. Modern iPhones encrypt the contents, and without the passcode even Apple generally cannot decrypt the device. If you only want to use the phone yourself, the realistic option is usually to have it erased and then address any Activation Lock or account-ownership issues through Apple’s official support process.

If your goal is to recover information rather than reuse the phone, check whether your father’s Apple Account was backed up to iCloud or to a computer. An unencrypted computer backup might contain a snapshot of the device from when it was created. Cloud data may also be recoverable through Apple’s deceased-account process, provided you can meet its legal and account requirements.
