What should I do if I think I might have malware on my computer?

Hey everyone,

I was browsing an article on the New York Post when I got redirected to one of those scary "your device is infected" pages, and then Chrome started trying to install something. Before I could figure out what was going on, I ended up on an Opera GX page, and I think what got installed was a fake Opera GX installer. I quickly deleted that file and cleared my recycle bin, but I'm not sure if that was the right choice. I also ran a Windows Defender scan, and it didn't find anything, but I'm still feeling paranoid. I did open the installer briefly before closing it, so I'm worried there might be malware lingering around.

Should I just wipe everything and do a fresh install of Windows for peace of mind, or do you think I'm okay? I don't have a lot on my computer anyway, so time isn't an issue. Thanks for your help!

If you didn’t fully run the installer, you’re probably in the clear! It sounds like you took some good steps by deleting the file and running a scan. Just keep an eye on things for now and wait to see if anyone else chimes in with more advice.

I appreciate the reassurance! I did briefly open it, but I closed it right away.

Consider using uBlock Origin as a precaution. And if you’re having issues with Chrome, switching to another browser can help. It’s always better to err on the side of caution!

Thanks for the tip! Should I trust Windows Defender and Malwarebytes, or should I be looking for something else?
