My current PC has a Ryzen 9 3900X, RTX 3060 12GB, 3×8GB DDR4 RAM running at 2400MHz, and an X570 motherboard. I mainly play at native 1080p on high or ultra settings, and occasionally use 1440p with DLSS on medium to high settings. I suspect the slow RAM is causing a bottleneck, so I'm considering replacing it with a 2×16GB DDR4-3200 kit. However, enabling XMP or setting the memory to 3200MHz makes the system hang, crash, or show a blue screen. I'm also experiencing noticeable stuttering or timing issues in games such as Battlefield 6. What should I test first, and is upgrading the RAM the best move, or should I leave the system alone or prioritize another component?

Start by identifying the actual issue instead of focusing on the word “bottleneck.” If the problem is stuttering, look at frametime graphs and check for background applications, shader compilation, thermal throttling, driver problems, or insufficient VRAM. If the GPU is near 95–100% usage, lower graphics settings or consider a GPU upgrade. If one or two CPU cores are maxed while GPU usage drops, the CPU or game engine is the constraint.
Don’t assume the bottleneck from online comparisons. Use monitoring tools such as MSI Afterburner with its on-screen display, or Windows performance monitoring, while playing the games that give you trouble. Check GPU usage, individual CPU-core usage, temperatures, clocks, RAM usage, frametimes, and VRAM usage. The component sitting near full utilization while frame delivery suffers is the part to investigate.
Running three memory sticks at 2400MHz is not ideal, but faster RAM alone probably won’t transform the system. A matched 2×16GB kit at 3200 or 3600MHz could improve consistency, but first make sure the kit is installed in the recommended motherboard slots and that the BIOS is up to date. Since XMP causes crashes, test the current memory with a tool such as MemTest86 or Windows Memory Diagnostic, and try a lower manual speed like 2933MHz with relaxed settings.
If the system is unstable even when using the advertised XMP profile, the kit, motherboard settings, or the CPU’s memory controller may need troubleshooting rather than simply increasing the speed.
The RTX 3060 is probably the limiting part at higher settings, especially if you raise the resolution or use demanding effects. At 1080p, though, the Ryzen 9 3900X can also limit maximum FPS in some newer or high-refresh-rate games. There isn’t one universal bottleneck; it depends on the game, settings, and target frame rate.
The graphics card was the most recent component I upgraded, so I was hoping the memory might be the easier fix.
