I want to become a programmer capable of building a computer assistant inspired by JARVIS from the movies. What should I learn first, which programming languages and technologies matter most, and what would a realistic development path look like?

Start with the fundamentals: choose a language such as Python, learn programming basics, and build small projects instead of jumping straight into a complete assistant. A good progression would be command-line tools, automation scripts, APIs, speech input and output, simple interfaces, and finally an assistant that can perform a few useful tasks.

Don’t focus too much on holograms or copying every movie feature. Current 3D displays, augmented reality, and voice models have significant limits, including latency, mistakes, usability issues, and hardware requirements. A well-designed desktop or phone interface may be more useful than a flashy holographic one.

A movie-accurate JARVIS isn’t currently realistic. It combines advanced natural-language understanding, reliable reasoning, speech interaction, computer control, robotics, smart-home access, and futuristic displays. We have separate technologies that approximate some of these features, but combining them into one consistently capable system is still a major research challenge.

You can still build a practical version by defining a narrow goal. For example, use Python with speech-recognition and text-to-speech tools, connect it to an AI model through an API, and add carefully controlled functions for opening applications, searching information, managing files, or controlling supported devices. Learn software engineering, security, APIs, databases, and AI basics as you expand it.
