What’s the sensible CPU upgrade for my older PC?

I have an i3-10100F, an ASUS PRIME H410M-F motherboard, and 16 GB of DDR4-2666 memory. I mainly want more CPU power for compiling and development. Is it better to find a compatible processor, or replace the motherboard and CPU together? I’m open to AMD if I can keep the RAM.

I’d price the whole upgrade before buying an older high-end Intel chip. The H410 platform is limited, and a used i7 from the same generation could be a reasonable stopgap if it’s genuinely cheap. But don’t pay a premium for an i9 just because it’s the top model that might fit. Check the exact CPU support list and BIOS requirements for your board first.

For compiling, core count can matter more than gaming-focused boosts. A newer motherboard and a many-core CPU may make more sense than spending heavily on an old LGA 1200 processor. Your DDR4 can likely carry over to a compatible DDR4 board, including some AMD options, but check the board’s memory support and your exact RAM kit before ordering. A new platform may also mean a new cooler or other parts, so compare the full cost.

Before settling on a CPU, check what your actual builds are waiting on. If long compiles are the problem, a processor with more cores and threads is a useful target. If you are often short on memory, moving from 16 GB to 32 GB could help too. The current 2 by 8 GB kit can be reused if the replacement board supports it, though it will remain DDR4-2666.

A used compatible i7 is the simplest route if you want to spend as little as possible and avoid changing the platform. I’d only do it after checking local used prices and confirming board support. If the price is close to a newer CPU and motherboard bundle, skip the old chip and put that money toward the newer setup instead.
