A close friend often sends me photos of her cat because we both love cats. Today, I found a picture of her cat in my phone's Gallery, and it appears to have been saved from WhatsApp. She says she didn't send me anything this morning, and I can't find the image anywhere in our chat. I also didn't take a screenshot. What could have caused the photo to appear in my Gallery?

It may have come from another chat where someone sent the image and then deleted the message. Depending on your WhatsApp and Gallery settings, the media could remain saved even after the message disappears. Search your other conversations and check recently deleted media if your phone has that feature.
Look at the file details, including its filename, folder location, creation date, and modification date. You could also compare the filename with the photos on your friend’s phone. Those details may show whether it was downloaded from WhatsApp, restored from a backup, or copied from another app.
First, check the image’s metadata and the exact date and time shown in your Gallery. That may indicate when the file was created or downloaded, although those timestamps can sometimes change when a photo is copied or synced.
The Gallery shows it as being added today at around 12:02, but I’m not sure whether that reflects when it was created or when it was downloaded.
Automatic syncing is another possibility. A cloud backup, linked device, shared album, or an accidentally enabled WhatsApp media-download setting could have copied the image to your phone without your friend intentionally sending it. Her phone may also have synced an older photo through a connected account.
I checked the conversations I could think of and didn’t find it, but I’ll look more carefully for deleted or archived chats.
