Why did AWS place and reverse $1 charges on my credit card?

I noticed a temporary $1 credit and a matching $1 charge on my credit card, even though I haven't changed anything on my AWS account or been actively using the free tier. Is this a routine payment-method verification, or should I be concerned that someone has accessed my card or account?

This is usually a temporary authorization used to verify that the card is valid. The charge should be released or reversed automatically, and it doesnโ€™t necessarily indicate that your account or card has been compromised. Itโ€™s still worth checking your AWS billing history and account activity if youโ€™re concerned.

I saw the same thing on another Amazon-linked account. In my case, the small hold disappeared, and I had previously received a notice explaining that the authorization would be released right away. If the charge doesnโ€™t reverse or you see anything else unusual, open a billing support case so they can review the account.
