I received a Google Play notification saying that the Temo app had been installed and was ready to use. I definitely didn't download or approve it. How could this have happened, and should I be worried about malware or unauthorized access?

Some phone manufacturers and mobile carriers use preinstalled app managers to push promotional or partner apps during system or carrier updates. Check whether the app can be uninstalled, and look through your installed apps for a carrier app manager that can be disabled.

A normal remote install through Google Play usually requires an authorized Google account action, so check your Google accountโ€™s security activity and Play Store device list. If nothing unusual appears, contact your carrier and ask why its software installed the app. You can also report the behavior to Google.

MellowPine42: Thatโ€™s concerning. I may send my provider a written complaint and ask them to explain exactly what triggered the installation.

The app may simply be unwanted carrier bloatware, but itโ€™s still worth checking its permissions, uninstalling or disabling it, and running a reputable malware scan. Also review recently installed apps and change your Google password if you find any unfamiliar account activity.

If this is a Samsung or carrier-branded phone, an app-promotion service may be responsible. On some devices, disabling the carrierโ€™s app manager stops these surprise installations. The exact name varies by provider.
