Why didn't my iPhone 17 restore apps and layout from my iPhone 15 backup?

I recently upgraded from an iPhone 15 to an iPhone 17 and decided to restore my new phone from a backup. However, I noticed that only my photos, WhatsApp chats, and some native Apple data transferred over. Unfortunately, none of my third-party apps, Home Screen layout, folders, or wallpaper came through. I ended up having to manually download everything and rearrange it all. Is this typical behavior? Has anyone else run into a similar issue?

What type of backup did you use? If it's an iCloud backup, that could change things. If you used a computer to create a backup, was it done through Finder on a Mac or Apple Devices on Windows? Also, make sure that the backup was encrypted; that can make a difference in what gets transferred. Check Apple’s support page for more details!

It sounds like the restore process might not have worked correctly. Double-check to see if you actually performed the restore after setting up your new iPhone. Sometimes people think they've restored when they haven't. It’s worth a look!

I had a similar experience after a backup I did normally about a day before transferring. It’s frustrating because you expect everything to come back the way it was. Just know you’re not alone on this one!
