Why do deleted Gmail messages keep reappearing in my inbox?

For the past couple of weeks, deleted messages in Gmail have been returning to my inbox a few hours later. This happens with marketing emails from stores as well as regular messages, and I've noticed it on multiple computers. I often have to delete the same emails two or three times before they finally stay gone. Has anyone else experienced this, and is there a way to fix it?

Same problem here. The messages may only be disappearing from the current view while Gmail is still syncing with the server. Giving it a little time before refreshing or switching devices seems to help.

I’ve noticed it too. Previously, if I tried to close Firefox right after deleting messages, it would warn that changes were still being saved. Now that warning can remain for several minutes, which suggests Gmail is taking longer to sync the changes. I’d wait for the save activity to finish before closing the tab.

That makes sense. I sometimes closed the tab despite the warning, and the messages didn’t always come back, but waiting for the changes to finish saving sounds safer.

I’ve been seeing the same thing. Gmail seems slower than usual when processing deletions, so I’ve started waiting until the deletion confirmation finishes or disappears before doing anything else. That seems to make the change stick.
