Why does my iPhone 16 keep saying it needs to cool down?

I received an iPhone 16 as a gift last July, after previously using an iPhone 11. About six months later, it began repeatedly showing the message "iPhone needs to cool down before you can use it," sometimes every few seconds or minutes and occasionally right after I picked it up. It happens even when the phone doesn't feel hot.
The retailer sent it for repair, but they said they couldn't find a problem. A second service center also tested it and found nothing wrong. I've tried restarting it, but the issue continues, so I've gone back to using my iPhone 11.
The phone is no longer under warranty, and I can't afford an expensive repair. Is there anything else I should try, such as a full backup and restore, or could this indicate a battery or other hardware problem?
Answers
Have an authorized Apple service location document the problem while itโs happening. If the issue started during the warranty period, explain that clearly and bring any previous repair paperwork. They may not automatically replace it after the warranty expires, but a documented recurring fault could help with a warranty exception or reduced-cost solution.

Because the warning appears while the phone is idle or cool, it may be a faulty temperature sensor or battery issue rather than genuine overheating. A damaged or swollen battery can trigger incorrect readings, so avoid continuing to use or charge it if the phone is bulging, unusually hot, or the screen is lifting. Have the battery and internal sensors specifically inspected instead of accepting a general โno problem foundโ result.

Before assuming itโs hardware, back up the phone and perform a proper iOS restore. Set it up as a new iPhone temporarily rather than immediately restoring the backup. If the temperature warning still appears on a clean setup, that strongly points to a hardware or sensor problem.

MellowCedar42: The problem first appeared while it was still under warranty, and both inspections happened during that period, but neither service center found anything. Iโll try to gather the paperwork and ask whether they can review it again.
