Why is SCCM reporting zero required Office 365 updates?

SCCM is showing that no Office 365 updates are required, even though I expected some clients to need them. Other update counts eventually appeared after taking longer than usual, but Office still shows nothing as applicable. This started around the time our Office installations changed from the Semi-Annual Enterprise Channel to the Monthly Enterprise Channel. Could a cloud-based Office update setting be taking over from SCCM, and how can I confirm which system is managing the updates?

Some update totals can take a while to refresh, especially after changing Office update channels. However, if Office continues to show zero applicable updates, review the deployment configuration, detection rules, and the channel assigned to the affected devices. Make sure the Office channel in the update catalog matches what the clients are actually running.

Check whether Office update management was enabled through the Microsoft 365 Apps admin center. If cloud-based updating is active, it can take control of the clients and make SCCM appear to have no applicable Office updates. Disable the cloud update policy if SCCM is supposed to remain the source of control, or deliberately move all Office update management there instead.

The cloud update setting may be enabled by default or may have been turned on during an administrative change. I only noticed it after clients started updating beyond the patch level we were enforcing, so it is worth checking the policy and client connectivity.
