I've noticed that searching for files or messages on devices has become really frustrating lately, and I'm not just talking about search engine results. I'm specifically referring to search features in apps like File Explorer, iMessage, Google Docs, and even the Windows taskbar. When I use high-quality search terms, I still end up getting irrelevant results or sometimes no results at all. What changes have contributed to this decline in search functionality over the past couple of years?

I did an experiment recently where I typed just 'at home' in my iPhone's photo app, and it instantly pulled up pictures of a hamper I had seen there! That’s great, but searching in the Mail app can feel totally random. It's hit or miss.

Honestly, Windows 11's search is a huge improvement over 10. Windows 10's search feature was pretty much useless for me, but 11 has way more options and works a lot better.

For work, I rely on tools like 'find' and 'grep' because they’re much more efficient. I have to use Windows, but I do all my searching through WSL for better results.

Windows search has never been great, honestly. What they did in the recent updates has been ridiculous. If you're looking for something better, there are actually third-party tools that can significantly improve your search experience.

It feels like all modern search functions are just trying to hook you with anything other than what you're actually looking for, using algorithms that are similar to Bing or Google. It’s all about keeping you engaged, not about getting to the point.
