Why Is Searching on Devices Getting Worse?

It feels like all modern search functions are just trying to hook you with anything other than what you're actually looking for, using algorithms that are similar to Bing or Google. It’s all about keeping you engaged, not about getting to the point.

Windows search has never been great, honestly. What they did in the recent updates has been ridiculous. If you're looking for something better, there are actually third-party tools that can significantly improve your search experience.

It seems like the focus has shifted to casting a wider net with search terms rather than prioritizing the quality of the results. The thinking might be that it’s better to give you a bunch of options, even if they’re not spot-on, rather than risk missing out on something entirely relevant.

For work, I rely on tools like 'find' and 'grep' because they’re much more efficient. I have to use Windows, but I do all my searching through WSL for better results.

Honestly, Windows 11's search is a huge improvement over 10. Windows 10's search feature was pretty much useless for me, but 11 has way more options and works a lot better.

I did an experiment recently where I typed just 'at home' in my iPhone's photo app, and it instantly pulled up pictures of a hamper I had seen there! That’s great, but searching in the Mail app can feel totally random. It's hit or miss.
