Why is the Gigabyte B550M K cheaper than boards like the MSI B550M-A Pro?

I noticed the Gigabyte B550M K costs about the same as—or sometimes a couple of dollars less than—the MSI B550M-A Pro, even though it appears to offer two additional RAM slots, another M.2 slot, an 8-pin CPU power connector instead of a 4-pin connector, and a few more rear USB ports. Neither board seems to have VRM heatsinks. Is there a reason the Gigabyte board is priced so low, or does the MSI board use higher-quality components that are not obvious from the basic specifications? I'm currently planning to use a Ryzen 5 5600 and may upgrade to a Ryzen 7 5700X3D later.

The connector count and number of slots are only part of the picture. A larger-looking feature list can come with compromises in power delivery, cooling, expansion bandwidth, or onboard controller quality. I wouldn’t choose solely by the number of USB ports or M.2 slots; compare the manual and independent board reviews, especially if you plan to upgrade the CPU later.

The lower price doesn’t necessarily indicate a serious problem. Manufacturers price models differently, and headline specifications can make a cheaper board look better than a more expensive one. Check detailed reviews for VRM temperatures, BIOS support, memory compatibility, M.2 and SATA lane sharing, audio, networking, and rear I/O before deciding. For a 5600, the Gigabyte board is likely fine if those tests are acceptable, but I’d be more cautious about pairing it with a 5700X3D without proper VRM heatsinks.

The feature list doesn’t tell the whole story. Motherboard costs can differ because of the VRM design and component quality, PCB layers, audio and network chips, and how the extra M.2 slot gets its lanes. An additional M.2 slot may run through the chipset at PCIe 3.0 speeds and share bandwidth with SATA ports. Likewise, an 8-pin CPU connector doesn’t automatically mean the board has a stronger power-delivery system; the circuitry behind it matters more. For a Ryzen 5 5600, either board should be adequate, but the lack of VRM heatsinks is more concerning for a Ryzen 7 5700X3D or a higher-power processor. A board such as the ASRock B550M Pro4 may be worth considering because it includes VRM cooling.
