I have an MP3 player that used to work normally with my Windows laptop, but now I can't access it to add new music. I've tried different USB cables and ports and reset both devices. The player charges when connected, but it doesn't display a USB connection notification and doesn't appear in File Explorer. Both devices seem to be functioning otherwise. What troubleshooting steps can help me get the laptop to recognize it again?

The exact steps can depend on the player’s brand, age, and whether it uses a built-in memory or a removable SD or microSD card. If it has a removable card, using a card reader is a practical workaround. Otherwise, try the player with another computer; if it still only charges there, the cable, USB port, or player’s data connection may be faulty.
Make sure the cable supports data transfer rather than charging only. Some cables provide power but have no data connections, so the player will charge without appearing on the computer. You can test the cable with another device that supports file transfers.
Check the player’s USB or connection settings for a mode such as MSC, USB storage, or Mass Storage. It may currently be set to a charging-only or media-sync mode. Switching to mass-storage mode should make it appear as a drive in File Explorer.

That makes sense. I’ll look through the player’s connection settings and check whether the cable works for data with another device.
