Why won’t my new 16GB DDR4 stick work with my two older 8GB sticks?

I bought a new 16GB Corsair DDR4 module and tried running it alongside two 8GB XPG DDR4 modules for a total of 32GB. I was told that different brands could work together as long as the speed matched, but the computer either fails to boot or crashes after a few minutes. I disabled XMP in the BIOS, and I also tried the 16GB stick with only one of the 8GB sticks, but that didn't work either. Windows sometimes starts and Task Manager shows 32GB installed, but opening applications causes the system to crash. Is there a reliable way to make these modules work together?

First test each module by itself. Run the 16GB stick alone in the recommended A2 slot, then test each 8GB stick separately. If one fails on its own, it may be defective. If they all work individually, try the original 2x8GB kit in the paired A2/B2 slots, then try the 16GB module alone. This will help determine whether the problem is the new RAM, a slot, or incompatibility between the modules.

Leave XMP disabled while troubleshooting and let the BIOS use its default settings. If the system remains unstable, manually set a conservative speed and the voltage specified for the slowest module, then run a memory test such as MemTest86. Also make sure the BIOS is updated and that the modules are fully seated. If Windows sees all 32GB but applications crash, that still points to unstable memory rather than successful compatibility.

There is no universal rule that different RAM brands can be combined successfully. Capacity matching is not the only factor, and using one 16GB stick with two 8GB sticks may prevent normal dual-channel operation even when it boots. For dependable performance, return the 16GB module if possible and buy a matched 2x16GB kit, or keep the original 2x8GB kit.

Mixed memory can work, but it isn’t guaranteed just because the DDR generation and rated speed match. The modules may use different timings, voltages, memory chips, or rank layouts, and three sticks can be especially troublesome because the memory controller normally prefers matched pairs. Check the motherboard manual for the supported slot combinations and memory QVL, but the most reliable solution is a matched 2-stick or 4-stick kit.
