Will AWS Automatically Charge My UPI Autopay Setup Even If I Stay Within the Free Tier?

I recently opened an AWS account and added UPI as the payment method. During setup, I authorized an autopay mandate for ₹15,000, and I'm worried that this amount might be deducted automatically. Is that just a payment authorization limit, or will AWS actually charge it? I'm starting with AWS under the Free Tier, so when would billing begin, and how can I monitor usage or disable autopay before any unexpected charge?

AWS doesn’t have one single “free plan.” The Free Tier applies to specific services and usage limits. You generally won’t be charged while you remain within those limits, but any usage beyond them—or services that aren’t covered—can create charges. Check the Billing console and set up billing alerts so you can catch unexpected usage early.

Be careful with resources that can generate charges even when you’re experimenting, such as storage, public IPv4 addresses, data transfer, snapshots, load balancers, and gateways. A small project can involve several billable services, so don’t assume that an account described as “free” guarantees a zero bill. The ₹15,000 UPI mandate usually represents the maximum amount authorized for automatic payments; it isn’t necessarily an immediate charge.
