Why are my CPU temperatures hitting 100°C after changing the thermal paste?

I've been having some serious overheating issues with my i7 3770 CPU. I recently replaced the thermal paste with MX4, but I'm still seeing temperatures spike up to 100°C even when the system is idle. Is it possible that I applied the wrong amount of thermal paste, or might my CPU be damaged?

First things first, make sure your heat sink is properly attached. If even one of the mounting points is loose or not secured, it can lead to major overheating issues. That's the most common cause I've seen in situations like yours.

You also want to double-check that your CPU cooler or pump is functioning well and plugged in. Sometimes, it’s a simple connection issue. Regarding the thermal paste, you don't want to use too much, as it can actually lead to worse cooling. A pea-sized amount is usually what you want.

I feel you on this, I'm a bit of a noob myself when it comes to PC parts. It's overwhelming to figure everything out, but we'll get there! Just keep asking questions.
