Why does my laptop shut down from overheating when gaming, even when it’s not hot?

I've been having this frustrating issue where my laptop shuts down almost instantly when I try to open any games. The problem seems to appear only after I set up the GPU driver and software. If I uninstall the driver, the laptop runs fine with older drivers, but they don't provide the performance I need. One older version even turns my game screen completely white. When my laptop does shut down due to 'overheating', as the system logs indicate, I get a BSOD with a DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL error related to amdkmpfd.sys when I attempt to reboot it. This software version used to work well before I reinstalled Windows multiple times. I'd really appreciate any solutions that don't involve downgrading to a less effective software version. I'm using an AMD Radeon HD 8790m with Windows 10.

It sounds like your laptop is experiencing some serious overheating issues, even if it doesn't feel hot to the touch. A possible first step is to check for crash logs that can help diagnose the BSOD issue. If you can boot into Windows normally or in Safe Mode, look in C:WindowsMinidump for any dump files. If you find some, zip the folder and upload it to a file-sharing site. Having multiple dump files can help in pinpointing the problem.
