I think my laptop might be fried after a weird experiment with audio gear

So I was trying to connect my Pioneer CD and cassette player to my laptop, and when I plugged in the jack to the CD player, the laptop just shut off. Now, when I hit the power button, the light comes on, but nothing else happens. I can't smell anything burnt, though there's a faint chemical smell if I sniff near the bottom grate. Just to clarify, it's a laptop, and there are headphone jacks on both sides. If I've truly messed up my laptop, what can I do to retrieve my data, files, and pictures?

It sounds like you connected two outputs together, which can definitely cause issues! But don’t panic just yet. First off, try removing everything including the battery (if it’s removable), and hold down the power button for about 30 seconds to reset it. Then just plug in the power and see if it boots up. You might just have triggered a safety feature. In the future, double-check which ports are outputs and inputs before making connections.

Thanks for the tip, I’ll be more careful next time! It worked; the laptop started up again!
