I just received an email regarding a GeoIP product that used to be free when bundled with pfSense. Initially, it jumped to $500 a year for multiple installations, but now it's set to increase to $5,000 per user or device starting in 2026. Am I missing something fundamental here? Should I consider changing careers to sell IP-to-location databases? Did Broadcom acquire the company or something?

What kind of use cases does your company have for these databases? Personally, my team uses it to restrict access to services based on IP ranges tied to our country. We’re not looking to let anyone from the other side of the globe into our VPN. We also limit access from certain places like North Korea where we have no business.
The good news is that there's still a lite version available for free on their site! You can find it if you look up MaxMind's GeoLite database. It might not have all the details you need, but it can be a great starting point for basic geolocation needs.
Price hikes like this often happen due to the surge in IoT devices; demand's skyrocketing! But yeah, the lite version is still an option if you're looking to save costs.
