Hey folks! I'm gearing up to build a new work/play PC primarily for gaming, rendering (using Cycles, Karma, Redshift), and experimenting with Stable Diffusion. My employer is covering the GPUs, which is great! I've done my homework, but given the rapid changes in components, especially with new processor generations, I'm getting a bit overwhelmed. I want to make sure I'm not missing any crucial components or making any rookie mistakes. Here's what I've planned out so far:
- **Processor**: Intel Ultra 9 285k
- **Motherboard**: MSI MAG Z890 Tomahawk
- **RAM**: Corsair Vengeance 4x48GB DDR5 6400 CL32
- **Air Cooler**: be quiet! Dark Rock Pro 5 270W
- **Power Supply**: MSI MEG Ai1600T 1600W 80+ Ti
- **Case Fans**: Bgears b-Blaster 120mm
- **Case**: Phanteks Enthoo Pro II Server Edition
- **GPUs**: 1x RTX Pro 6000 + 1x RTX 5090 OR 2x RTX 5090
- **Storage**: WD SN850X 4TB + SN850X 8TB SSDs
I'd love your feedback, especially regarding the motherboard and RAM choices. I see some pricey motherboards out there, but this machine is primarily GPU-focused and I'm not planning on overclocking—just underclocking if anything. Any glaring red flags or poor choices I should be aware of?

Your RAM choice seems solid, speed and timings are good. I think everything will function properly without any hitches. That said, I might recommend considering the 9900x3d or 9950x3d instead for a better gaming experience. They’re a bit pricey, but they’re more suited for gaming and won’t hold you back in productivity either. Plus, going with a non-obsolete platform is a nice bonus!
I understand your point! The 285k caught my eye during Prime Day with a hefty discount, plus it has some nifty PCIe options which looked promising for GPU stacking. Just curious, what do you mean by 'non-dead platform'? Are you referring to the LGA1851 socket?
