What GPU Should I Get to Upgrade from My GTX 1080 with an 8700K?

Hey everyone! I've been using my GTX 1080 for almost 7 years now, and I think it's finally given up on me. I'm looking for a new GPU that can handle gaming at 1080p and 1440p, and I'm hoping it lasts at least 2 years. I plan to upgrade my whole system eventually, but for now, I just want something that won't get bottlenecked by my Intel i7-8700K. Any suggestions?

Honestly, if you're looking for value, go for a used RTX 20 series GPU. Your 8700K paired with a solid used GPU like that won't break the bank, and it should still perform decently without bottlenecking too much.

Yeah, that could be a smart move. No point in overspending on a top-tier card right now when you’re planning a full upgrade.

Considering you're having issues with your 1080, you might want to ensure your new GPU can fit comfortably in your case and that your PSU is up to the task. I'd steer clear of anything insanely powerful like the RTX 4080 since your CPU won't keep up, but anything in the mid-range should fit nicely.

I think a great option for you would be the RTX 4060 Ti or the RX 7700 XT. Those can handle both 1080p and 1440p gaming really well. Just keep in mind that your 8700K might bottleneck them a bit at higher resolutions. Also, make sure your power supply has enough wattage before you buy a new card!

What about the RTX 4070? Wouldn’t that handle things better? Just wondering if the bottleneck would be significant.

For a temporary fix with your i7-8700K, I'd say the 4060 Ti or a used GTX 1070 might do. Just keep your expectations realistic. Make sure you have adequate cooling and space in your case too!

If you're just going to end up replacing your whole rig soon, I'd recommend getting the best GPU you can afford now. A high-end card today will still be great for 1440p, even after future upgrades. Just check that your PSU can handle it!

Totally agree! Why buy something lower tier when you could make a better investment now?
