Is a 5070 in a PCIe 3.0 x4 Slot Problematic?

I recently upgraded to a 5070 with 12GB memory, and while my gains seem fine, I've come across some discussions about PCIe slots that I hadn't considered before. I'm currently using a Gigabyte A520I AC with a PCIe 3.0 x4 slot. I'm wondering if I should upgrade my motherboard or if the performance increase would really justify the cost. Any advice would be appreciated! By the way, I'm running a 5700X3D and have 32GB of RAM.

From what I've seen, a 5070 doesn't even come close to saturating the bandwidth of a PCIe 3.0 x4 slot, let alone anything newer. So, you really shouldn't worry about it affecting performance significantly.

Benchmarks show that potential performance loss can range from 0% up to 10%, but it really depends on the game you're playing. For most cases, it’s not a huge deal.

Your motherboard has a PCIe 3.0 x16 slot according to the manual, while your m.2 is PCIe 3.0 x4. You can check this with GPU-Z to see the actual lanes used. Generally, you might only see a performance drop of about 1-3% when compared to a PCIe 4.0 x16 setup. So, unless you’re chasing every last bit of performance, it doesn’t seem worth upgrading right now!

That’s great to know! I should have checked the manual. Sounds like my current setup is fine, and I definitely appreciate not having to spend £150 on an AM4 motherboard.
