Why is my Windows 11 always hitting 100% disk usage?

I'm having a huge issue with my Windows 11 system constantly reaching 100% disk usage, even when it's just idling. This makes my entire computer freeze up, preventing me from downloading from Steam, editing videos, or even browsing the web smoothly. The main problem seems to be linked to the "System" process in my Task Manager. I've already tried a bunch of fixes like disabling fast boot, changing indexing options, and turning off the write-caching policy, but nothing has worked so far. I'm desperate for some suggestions, so if you have any ideas, I'm open to trying just about anything. Here are my specs: i7 14700k, 2080 Super, SanDisk SSD Plus (1000GB), and 32GB DDR5 RAM.

It sounds like your SSD might be on its last legs, or there could be some malware lurking around. Those settings you disabled probably wouldn’t fix the disk usage issue anyway. Also, make sure to back up your data before making changes, just in case.

I really don’t think it’s malware since I’m super careful about my downloads. However, could a failing SSD cause the System process to always write to the disk? It seems more like an OS issue to me, especially since the SSD is still doing fine with downloads when it’s not acting up.

Before you try anything else, make sure your drivers are all up to date. Sometimes outdated drivers can trigger weird behavior like this. Also, running a disk check might help to see if there are any file system errors causing the spike in usage.

Have you checked if the latest Windows 11 update is causing problems? There were some reports about it messing with certain SSDs. If that’s the case, it might be a good idea to disconnect any spare drives to prevent further issues until a fix comes out. Good luck!
