Help! My Brother’s PC Won’t Power On After a Shut Down

Hey everyone, my brother's PC unexpectedly shut off last night while he was playing Marvel Rivals, and now it won't turn back on. I've built and troubleshot PCs before, but I'm a bit stumped this time. Usually, everything has run smoothly for years.

Before the shutdown, the PC was lagging a bit, which makes me think it could be some kind of hardware issue. When we attempt to power it back on, nothing happens at all—no lights, no fan spins—though the motherboard seems to have power since the ROG logo lights up and changes color when the PSU is on. The system has RGB fans and RAM too.

I've already tried resetting the RAM and tested each stick individually, but that didn't solve the problem. The CPU header looked a bit loose, so I fixed that, but still no luck. My brother recently installed a new GPU (upgraded from GTX 1060 to RTX 3060), but he's been gaming on it for about a week without issues, so I doubt that's the problem. He also got a bit frustrated during gaming and slammed his hands on the desk, which got me wondering if he might have jarred something loose.

I haven't unplugged or re-plugged the case headers yet. If the power switch headers are loose, I wouldn't think that would instantly turn the PC off, right? I suspect it could be a power supply or CPU issue. I've got an extra CPU from my last upgrade, but I don't have an extra PSU to test. Has anyone dealt with something like this before? Any insight would be greatly appreciated!

You might want to try the paperclip test on the PSU to see if it's faulty. It’s a good way to check if the power supply is working without needing to swap it out for another one. If you want to confirm the PSU is the problem, just short the green wire with a black ground wire and see if the PSU turns on without being connected to the motherboard.

Thanks for the tip! I actually tried jumping it with a screwdriver to the power switch header, but no power came on. I've unplugged and re-plugged a lot of connections too, but I'm still stuck. What else can we check?

From what you've described, it sounds a lot like a PSU issue to me. I had a similar problem with my ASUS motherboard where it would show RGB lights but wouldn’t boot. I eventually found out that my PSU had died, even though some components still lit up.

Have you tried booting without the GPU? Sometimes if the GPU is faulty, it can prevent the whole system from powering on. You could also have the GPU tested separately to see if it’s working.

Yeah, we actually pulled the GPU out and tried to start it up, but it still wouldn't power on. We’re thinking it’s either the PSU or the motherboard, and I’ve done some research that indicates the PSU might not be the most reliable. I guess I need to borrow a PSU from my rig and see if that solves the issue!
