We've recently purchased a new laptop for my husband, and although he's only been using it for a few months, I've noticed that the internal fan is frequently kicking into high gear for a few seconds and then returning to normal. He uses a separate lap fan beneath it as well. Can anyone suggest what might be causing this issue?

Sounds like dust buildup might be the issue. If you can, try opening up the laptop and giving it a good clean!
There are a few possibilities here:
- The vents could be blocked, especially if he uses it on soft surfaces like a couch or bed.
- Check if there's a BIOS update available for the laptop.
- Sometimes, improper application of thermal paste on the CPU can cause overheating, too.
If it's a Windows laptop, you can monitor CPU load with the Task Manager to see if spikes align with the fan noise, or download a program to check the CPU's temperature.
It might be related to what he's doing on the laptop. For instance, gaming can strain the components and trigger the fan to cool things down. On the flip side, if he's just browsing and the fan still gets loud, the vents might be clogged. How does that external fan behave during use?
You could download CoreTemp to monitor how hot the laptop is running. That might give you some clues about what's happening!
