Why is my friend’s CPU maxing out while playing Fortnite with a new GPU?

My friend just upgraded from an RTX 3060 to a 4060 Ti, but he's running into some major issues. Whenever he launches Fortnite, his CPU usage spikes to 90-100%, which is worrying him. Previously, with the RTX 3060, the CPU usage was around 70-80%, but he didn't think much of it back then. He's not very tech-savvy and is considering selling the new graphics card due to these problems. Here are his specs: he has an i5-12400F CPU, and he believes he has 16GB of DDR4 RAM. He mentioned that his system is a prebuilt model that came with a 700-watt PSU. Can anyone explain why the CPU is struggling like this? Is there something wrong with the setup?

This sounds normal for Fortnite. The game leans heavily on CPU usage—so with the new GPU, it’s likely just hitting the CPU's limits. It doesn’t seem like the graphics card or other settings are the problem; it's just that the CPU is on the weaker side.

Is it possible that the monitor is connected to the wrong port? Make sure the display cables are plugged into the GPU and not using the onboard graphics. Also, 700 watts should be more than enough for the 4060 Ti, so that's likely not the issue. Just double-check the connections and see if everything is set up correctly!

Fortnite tends to be pretty CPU-intensive, which could explain the high usage, especially if the CPU isn’t particularly powerful. You might want to check the resolution your friend is playing at too. Upgrading the CPU could definitely help if they want to get better performance, but that depends on their budget!
