I just bought an Intel 8700k because I wanted to play games like Avowed and Oblivion Remastered. However, I'm noticing that both games are stuck at about 40fps in demanding areas, and I really need at least a stable 60fps for them to feel playable. I can run both games at high settings at 1440p, but it still only gives me 40fps. Lowering the settings to low at 1080p doesn't seem to help much either, as I'm still stuck in the 35-40fps range. Since both of these titles use Unreal Engine 5, I'm wondering if I need to upgrade my CPU, as I suspect it might be the bottleneck. Am I wrong for choosing the 8700k?

Yeah, the 8700k is getting pretty old at this point. It's understandable that it struggles with modern games. Upgrading your CPU is definitely going to help. You'd likely benefit from a newer setup with a better motherboard and RAM as well.
I don't get why you’d buy an 8700k in 2025. It's a solid CPU but seriously outdated for what's out there now. You should definitely look into something more current like an AM5 system if budget allows.
Thanks! It sounds like I need a full upgrade then.
