I've got an old Asus PC with DDR3 RAM, and I'm pretty sure it doesn't have any SSD slots. It boots up really slowly, and my wife is always complaining about it. I'm thinking about getting a USB SSD and installing Windows on it. Will this actually speed up booting and shutting down?

Using an SSD connected via USB likely won't give you the speed boost you're hoping for. It'll be slower than a SATA SSD. But don't worry, you could still find a SATA SSD that should work with your PC if it has SATA ports available; that will make a noticeable difference over using an HDD. Here's a quick speed breakdown: USB stick is around 20MB/s, SATA HDD about 175MB/s, and SATA SSD hits around 500MB/s. So, if your motherboard has those SATA slots, definitely go for a SATA SSD instead!

Thanks for clarifying the speed differences!
