Why is My Ethernet Connection So Unstable?

I recently set up a brand new desktop computer with an ethernet connection, but it's really choppy. I've tried different cables, tweaked my router settings, and even removed the IEEE adapter, but nothing seems to help. The connection fluctuates wildly, going from 100KB/s to 1GB/s and then dropping to 0B/s for no apparent reason. My Wi-Fi works perfectly on all my other devices, and the same cable gives a stable connection on those. This specific machine needs to be on ethernet for work, so I need to figure this out!

I see you're having some issues with speeds dropping. Have you tried connecting it directly to the router instead of going through any network switches? That can sometimes make a difference. If the problem continues, consider testing another ethernet port on the router to rule out hardware issues.

Yeah, definitely worth a shot! Even a bad port can lead to those kinds of problems.

Also, ensure the router's firmware is up to date—sometimes that's the culprit!

It might be worth checking if you have the latest Windows drivers for your network card. Sometimes outdated drivers can cause connectivity problems. Also, make sure your ethernet port isn’t loose or damaged. If the issue persists, you could try running a speed test to see if the results are consistent with what you're experiencing.

You could also try checking for any background apps that might be using bandwidth; they can cause interruptions!

Good point! Sometimes a simple driver update can work wonders for network issues.
