Why is my PC shutting down during stress tests with my new GPU?

Hey everyone, I recently picked up a pre-owned RX 6500XT, and I've been stress testing it using OCCT at 6 shaders, which seems to work fine. However, when I crank it up to 8 shaders or run FurMark, my PC shuts down unexpectedly. I've only had it for about six days and tomorrow is the last day I can return it. Even though I have a month-long warranty, I want to identify any issues before the return period ends. In gaming, it performs smoothly, especially for sim racing, which is a significant upgrade from my previous integrated graphics. What do you think I should do? Just an FYI, I'm using a Ryzen 3 3200G, a 450-watt PSU, and a Gigabyte 450M H motherboard.

If upgrading the PSU isn't an option, I would suggest returning the card while you still can, especially since you're experiencing shutdowns during stress tests. However, if it’s performing well in games, you might choose to keep it and see how it goes with a lower load. You still have a warranty if problems persist later.

It sounds like your power supply unit (PSU) might not be powerful enough to handle the load when you're testing at higher shaders. I recommend using a tool to monitor your hardware—check for temperatures and power draw during the stress tests. Those shutdowns could be a result of the PSU struggling to keep up with the increased demand.

I checked my temps before the shutdowns; they were around 55°C, so I don't think overheating is the issue.

Yeah, it seems like the power spike when you push your GPU harder is too much for your current PSU. Since you can't upgrade the PSU right now, you might want to explore options like undervolting the GPU to see if that helps to stabilize things without causing a shutdown.

I really don’t want to return it, especially since it's working great in Assetto Corsa. Do you think it’s worth trying those tweaks first?
