Hey everyone, I've hit a snag with my Veeam backup server that I've been using without issues for years. Recently, I've noticed a sudden spike in disk activity, but the strange part is that no backup jobs are currently running. In the task manager, it appears that the "System" process is responsible for the heavy disk writes, yet the E: drive isn't filling up at all. I've also checked using resmon.exe, and there's no indication of anything writing to the E: drive. The disk activity is erratic—it spikes up to 100% and 550MB/s on the RAID10 volume for a few seconds, then drops, and this has been going on for several days now. I'm running this in a VMware 7 environment, and all the underlying mechanical disks in the PowerVault are showing healthy. Any insights on what might be happening?

Have you checked if you're doing any replication? It could be worth looking into your replication partner to see if there's a correlation. Also, make sure your Veeam server is using Changed Block Tracking (CBT) for jobs. This is typically on by default, but you never know—if CBT isn’t enabled, Veeam's proprietary CBT feature can cause issues similar to what you're experiencing.
Could it be that your hardware RAID controller is performing some sort of RAID synchronization? It's worth checking. I've seen cases where unexpected disk activity comes from the RAID setup claiming some background tasks.
