I have a USB drive that I need to add some files to, but when I plug it into my Windows computer, it prompts me to format the drive first. Is there any way I can add files without having to format the USB? I really need to keep the existing data on it if possible.

You can't really add files to a USB drive without formatting if it's asking you to do so. The drive might be using a format that's incompatible with your PC. If you're not able to format it because you need to use it for a Wii U, you could try resizing the partitions to make space for both systems, but that can be tricky and may require special tools.
It sounds like your USB might be corrupted or formatted in a way that Windows doesn't recognize. To get your files back, you could use file recovery software to retrieve anything important. However, you'll probably still need to format it afterward if you want to use it reliably with your PC.
Yeah, it's a pain, especially for modding purposes! But if you can get it working with the Wii U first, that might just be the quickest route.
