Will upgrading to DDR5 RAM reduce my overall RAM usage?

I'm currently using 32GB of DDR4 2100 RAM and planning to build a new PC. I'm considering switching to DDR5, but due to budget constraints, I can only afford another 32GB for now. My RAM usage is often around 28GB, and everything is running smoothly. I'm curious if upgrading to faster RAM, specifically 6000 DDR5 with a 30CL latency, will lead to lower RAM usage, especially since I use a lot of virtual machines.

Upgrading from DDR4 to DDR5 won't necessarily reduce your RAM usage. In fact, having more RAM typically means your system will just use more of it if it's available. You’ll still use about the same amount if your workload is the same.

So, how can I tell when I actually need to upgrade my RAM? Is it just when things start lagging?

What operating system are you running? Your RAM usage sounds high unless you're using specialized software. Depending on your workload, you might need to rethink your setup.

Nope. If you're regularly using 28GB, that’s just what your workflow demands. Upgrading to a different type of RAM won't change the amount you're using.

It’s important to note that your operating system will utilize available RAM efficiently. So even if you upgrade to 64GB, your system will use it as needed. If you’re not running into performance issues, you might be fine without upgrading right now.

Honestly, the key isn't just about RAM type; it’s about having enough RAM for your tasks. If you’re consistently using around 28GB, then getting more RAM could help with headroom in the future, even if the DDR version doesn’t change your current usage significantly.

Interesting! What are the main differences between DDR3, DDR4, and DDR5?
