How Will Micron’s Changes Impact MacBook Prices?

Hey everyone! I'm in a bit of a bind here. My laptop is basically on its last legs, and I need to consider getting a new one soon. I'm looking at switching to a MacBook, and I've heard that the best time to snag a good deal is right after a new model launches—so I'm thinking spring 2026 for the M5. My plan is to hold onto my current, outdated machine until then. However, I've been reading some concerning things about a serious RAM shortage that's driving prices up. My question is: should I bite the bullet and buy a MacBook now to dodge any future price hikes from RAM shortages, or could it be smarter to wait until March or April for an M4 discount after everyone trades in for the shiny new M5?

Don’t stress too much! Micron isn’t really leaving the DRAM market; they're just shifting their focus for direct sales. If anything, this means Apple and others could see even higher volumes coming in, which might stabilize prices.

Good point! Maybe the prices won’t be as wild as people are fearing.

Micron is still supplying big companies like Apple, so the impact on consumer prices might not be as bad as you think. Apple's markup on RAM helps them weather market fluctuations, so I wouldn't stress too much about timing your purchase. While you might save a little waiting for the M5, it’s not a huge difference. You could miss out on some good discounts now if you hold off!

Exactly! Even if you wait, you might save just a small amount on a high-priced item. If you need it sooner, it might be better to just go for it.

I'm also leaning towards waiting for the M5 release. Many people seem to think it’s worth holding out for better specs and potential deals on the M4 after the new release.
