Could I have malware from a driver setup file?

I was trying to update my chipset driver and downloaded something called "driveridentifier_setup.exe." I checked it on VirusTotal, and it flagged it as having malware. When I attempted to delete it by right-clicking and selecting the trash option, my File Explorer froze for a moment, and then my screen went black briefly. I'm really concerned that I might have malware on my system. What should I do?

If File Explorer froze, it may be just a temporary glitch. Closing it can make your desktop background disappear too, but you can restart it via Task Manager. As for the drivers, confirm the source before downloading anything to keep your system safe.

Stay away from those random driver utilities in the future. They often do more harm than good. Unless you’re experiencing issues, chipset drivers usually don’t need updating frequently, and sticking to the support page for your product is the safest bet.

It's really important to be cautious with downloads like that. First things first, you should definitely run a full virus scan to see if anything malicious is on your computer. Also, for future driver updates, stick to downloading them directly from the manufacturer's official website to avoid any risks of installing malware.

Totally agree! I can't believe I didn't think of that before. Guess I learned my lesson.

It sounds like you might be fine, but checking where you downloaded that setup file is key. If it’s from a sketchy site, it’s better to be safe than sorry. After scanning, you might even want to reinstall your drivers just to be sure everything is clean.

Yeah, I realized I downloaded the same file from a similar site once. Never again!
