Is Switching to a 5G Hotspot for Backup Internet a Good Idea?

I'm thinking about setting up a 5G hotspot as a backup internet option instead of going with traditional ISPs like Comcast or Century Link. My plan is to have it kick in if the main internet goes down. I'm eager to hear from anyone who has experience using these hotspots in a business setting. How did it work out for you?

We're currently using a primary fiber connection with a backup 5G network. We switched to a Verizon 5G gateway after a semi-truck took out our regular line. It hasn’t failed us yet, and it costs significantly less than our previous backup. Just be aware, if your main line goes down, your setup could still face issues since things are often tied to a static IP.

I've seen mixed results during actual outages. For instance, when I tested my Verizon hotspot, I got around 500 Mbps, but during a city-wide outage, it dropped to just 50 Mbps. So, keep that in mind!

In the UK, using 4G/5G can come with some quirks, like CGNAT, which means your IP could be shared and possibly blacklisted. It might affect your access to certain content, and speeds can vary a lot, especially during outages. Overall, if you can handle those potential issues, I'd say go for it!

It works pretty well! Just a heads-up, you might need to tweak your firewall settings a bit for better performance, especially if the bandwidth is limited.

Using a 4G/5G backup with a static IP is quite common and can work well for business needs. For example, Earthlink and Verizon offer 200M symmetric 5G backup in some areas. Just make sure to check the service and confirm the signal strength where you are; sometimes, it might be different in practice than on paper.
