How to Efficiently Inventory Assets in a Tight Timeline?

I'm working at a medium-sized manufacturing company, and currently, we lack a comprehensive asset list; we only have details on computers stored in our RMM system. There used to be a database for assets, but it was deleted due to lack of updates. I've set up Jira Assets, and my manager wants me to inventory three entire buildings in about 2-3 weeks, which collectively might have around 250 computers as well as other items like displays and scanners. I have experience with inventorying buildings from previous jobs, but handling over 600 items on my own within such a short timeframe feels daunting. I'm considering walking through with a laptop and entering data as I go, but I'm unsure if that's the best approach. Should I tackle it room by room, or is there a more effective strategy?

If you're allowed to use PowerShell, you can quickly gather asset data by running some scripts to pull serial numbers and model names. This could save you a lot of time instead of individually entering each item.

Look into using GLPI, which offers an inventory agent you can apply to your devices to collect asset information automatically. This way, you can focus on the few items it might miss during your walkthrough.

Consider asking your manager for assistance. Trying to complete this alone could lead to burnout and might affect the quality of your work. A temporary staff member could really help, even if they're not from IT. It's better to set clear expectations now rather than rushing and potentially missing important details later.

If you're dedicated to the inventory process, it's definitely doable room by room within the time you have. Just make sure to stay focused on this task to meet your deadline.

You might want to deploy your MDM/RMM agent to as many devices as possible. Integrating that with your asset management tool allows for automatic report updates. Labeling your assets and scanning them could also streamline the process.
