I've got multiple users reporting a frustrating issue where their external monitors blink out when plugged into a dock. We've got a mix of brands here: one user has a Lenovo laptop with a Lenovo dock, another is using all HP gear, and a third has all Dell hardware. Interestingly, the monitors don't completely disconnect from Windows—they remain in the display settings. Users can even use their mouse on what seems like a blank screen, and the windows that were previously open can still be relocated using shortcuts. Sometimes the monitors flicker for a few seconds and then come back, but other times they require unplugging and re-plugging the sync cable or even resetting the dock or laptop. Two of the users (Lenovo and HP) have been experiencing this issue even after getting new computers. We've swapped out cables, docks, and monitors, yet the problem persists. I tried taking out other USB devices, including switching back from wireless peripherals to wired ones, but that didn't help either. We've updated all the firmware and drivers, but nothing seems to solve the issue. I also have a similar problem while working from home, though it's not as annoying for me since I'm in IT, but when using my HP Elitebook and HP Omen on the same dock, I find that videos from certain websites cause the monitors to blink. The main concern is that the users are just using office apps and aren't even dealing with multimedia files. Vendor support has been quite unhelpful, so I'm reaching out to see if anyone else has faced this and found any solutions. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

I had a similar experience where my monitors would flicker without even using a dock. Sometimes static electricity comes into play, so check if there are grounding issues in your building that might be affecting things.
Try these steps to see if they help: 1) Set all monitors to 60Hz to avoid negotiation drops, 2) Disable HDR or adaptive sync on your monitors, 3) Turn off power-saving features in Intel Graphics Command Center, 4) On USB-C, uncheck the option to let the computer turn off the devices on the root hubs, 5) If using DisplayPort over USB-C, switch it to DP 1.2 in the monitor settings, 6) If flickering persists, check your settings for multi-plane overlay. Sometimes hardware acceleration in browsers can also cause issues, so try turning that off if you're seeing flickers during video playback.
This flickering can often be a result of disruptions with your HDMI or DisplayPort cables. Believe it or not, even things like the gas piston in your chair can sometimes interfere! Maybe look into higher-quality cables that have better shielding.
It's likely a widespread issue across different dock manufacturers, considering all the different setups you've tried. For us, using Dell monitors with built-in docks has helped reduce the flickering significantly. It seems like some brands just handle the connection better than others.
Sounds like a solid approach! It may take some trial and error, but finding that right combination of hardware can really make a difference.
Lowering the refresh rate to 60Hz seemed to fix the problem for us with the Lenovo Thunderbolt docks. It was originally set to 75Hz, but switching to 60 made all the flickering disappear.

Great advice! It feels like we're constantly battling similar issues with external displays and docks, so thanks for the tips. I'll definitely pass this along to the team.
