Why can’t I set my monitor to 120Hz while mirroring to my 120Hz TV?

I'm having trouble getting my 120Hz monitor to display at that refresh rate while I'm mirroring it to my 120Hz TV, which is connected to my PC via HDMI. Even though the TV claims to support 120Hz, when I check in Windows, the option for 120Hz has an asterisk next to it, indicating that the resolution isn't supported. In the NVIDIA control panel, I can choose 120Hz from the resolutions, but it switches back as soon as I apply it. I know it's not the HDMI cable, as I've had this setup working before, but a recent Windows update seems to have caused this issue.

Double-check the HDMI version on your laptop. If it's HDMI 2.0, that's limited to 60Hz unless you're using specific settings. I read that you can technically get 120Hz at 4:2:0 chroma, but it requires the right drivers and configuration, which can be tricky!

Exactly! I had to play around with the chroma settings to get it to work on my setup. Just be sure everything supports what you're trying to do.

It's also possible that the TV isn't genuinely 120Hz; some models use software to simulate higher refresh rates. Check the model specs to be sure!

If you haven't tried it yet, outputting to the TV only (instead of mirroring) might work better! I found that when I tried that with my laptop, it solved my refresh rate issues completely. Just something to consider!

It sounds like your HDMI cable might not be up to the task! If you're dealing with 4K, make sure you're using a cable rated for at least 48Gbps. Otherwise, you can run into these weird refresh rate issues. Just a thought!

Yeah, I've got a similar setup, and when I switched cables, it fixed my issue too. Might be worth a shot!

From what I've experienced, some older TVs only have one HDMI port that supports 120Hz, and only at certain resolutions. Try using a different port or adjusting the resolution settings in your display options.
