I've been using my AMD Ryzen 5 3600 for almost six years, and it's been getting quite hot lately. Some of my favorite games are starting to freeze my computer, which forces me to restart it. I think it's time for a CPU upgrade. Here are my current specs: Windows 11 OS, a custom-built PC, Ryzen 5 3600 CPU, B450 TOMAHAWK MAX motherboard, 24GB RAM (2133MHz), multiple storage drives (including a 4TB HDD and 2TB SSD), Gigabyte Radeon Rx 6750xt video card, and a 650W power supply. I'm considering upgrading to an AMD Ryzen 7 5800XT and getting an aftermarket cooler. My case only has 160mm of clearance for a CPU heatsink, but the one I'm looking at is 157mm. Do you think this is a good upgrade path?

That sounds like a solid upgrade! If you're looking for a good cooler, check out the Thermalright Phantom Spirit. I got the Evo version for under $50, and it's performing great. Upgrading from the Ryzen 3600 to the 5800XT will definitely give you a boost in performance, and you might even recover some cash by selling your old CPU. As for clearance, it should fit perfectly in your case!
Before you invest in a new CPU, consider resealing the thermal paste on your current cooler. That might solve your overheating issue and improve performance without needing to upgrade right away. But if you're looking to upgrade anyway, the Ryzen 7 is a great pick!

I get that, but I'm ready for a change and can afford the upgrade.
