Should I Upgrade to an RX 7900 XTX for $150?

I'm considering upgrading my PC setup. Right now, I have an RTX 4070 Ti paired with a Ryzen 7 7800x3D CPU and 32GB of DDR5-6000 RAM. I found a used RX 7900 XTX for $550 and offered my sibling my 4070 Ti for $400. This means the effective cost to me would be $150. The 7900 XTX has been benchmarked and is working well, so I'm not worried about performance. I primarily use my PC for VR gaming (like VRChat and Beat Saber), and I also play Battlefield 6 and other modern games, all at 1440p and up to 165Hz. Given that the 7900 XTX has double the VRAM, do you think this upgrade is worth it? I'm curious if losing ray tracing and DLSS will affect my gaming experience in the long run. Thanks for your advice!

That’s a slick price for the 7900 XTX, but I’d caution you. The performance jump isn’t massive over the 4070 Ti unless you’re really pushing high settings. Since you do VR, Nvidia tends to have better support and performance there, so consider that if VR is your thing.

That’s true! But AMD’s driver support has improved a lot since their new lineup, so it’s worth checking real-world performance for VR.

As a current 7900 XTX owner, I can say it’s a fantastic card. Sure, you might miss some features like DLSS, but for sheer performance, especially in VR, the card excels. I can easily hit crazy frame rates at 1440p in demanding titles. Just depend on how much you value those missing features in your gaming.

Totally agree! The horsepower of the XTX compensates for the lack of DLSS, and it’s amazing for VR applications.

Thanks for the insight! I really want to make sure I’m future-proofing my setup.

Remember, the 7900 XTX runs hot! If your room gets warm in the summer, prepare for it to be even toastier with this card. Just something to keep in mind before you pull the trigger on that upgrade.

That seems like a great deal! The RX 7900 XTX is a beast, especially for the price. If it’s performing well and has that 24GB VRAM, it'll definitely give you a solid upgrade, mainly because of the extra VRAM. Even if ray tracing and DLSS aren’t included, the raw power should help with most games out there.

Honestly, if you're already selling the 4070 Ti to your sibling, then maybe the upgrade is worth it. But you might want to think about how important DLSS and ray tracing are for your future gaming—these features are becoming more prevalent. The 7900 XTX is a great card, but depending on your gaming habits, you might miss those features down the line.

Yeah, that’s what I’m worried about. I enjoy the latest games and those features are becoming standard. Thanks for the heads-up!
